The Naked Self

By Tony DeLorger © 2012

How gnarled and deluded the thoughts of self,

when truth abundant eludes the conscious mind,

cowers in shadows etched from a stone will.

The weight of armour in war’s lament,

like a shell apart keeps us at arms length,

none too close to the light of day,

too near to the possibility of revelation.

We bear so little to a world demanding,

rather twist ourselves into conformity,

an illusion of reality.

So used to our trickery,

we no longer know who we are,

what we truly want and are prepared to do in attainment.

Our clothing dense and set becomes the barrier of change,

and we, stuck within it, are lost in pretention.

Love remains our only hope of acknowledging truth,

the only state of selflessness that defines what we are beneath the shroud,

what potential lies beneath the illusion.

Surrender to an ideal greater that we as individuals,

frees the souls to just be, without consideration,

without the slight of hand we have come to master.

Naked before our reflection,

we can begin to know who we are in sacrifice,

in potential of service and a loving heart.

Let not the illusion of conformity define you,

naked is the only way the light can touch us truly.

Another great job, Tony! The last two line conclude it wonderfully:

"Let not the illusion of conformity define you,

naked is the only way the light can touch us truly"

Beautifully written and, not coincidentally, true. Voted up!

Beautiful, awesome old fashioned poetry. I love your use of old language style - you are wasted here...your talents should be out there with the greats!
