The Carelessness of Thought

By Tony DeLorger © 2011

It is not the hate in life that I detest so much,

but the carelessness of thought that determines it.

How deep the thoughts of compassion and kindness are buried,

within the refuse of daily troubled life.

How corrupt we can become in our focus of gain,

selfish ignorant thoughts propagated by fear.

Fear that comfort will abandon us,

possessions will be taken and we will be less somehow.

How careless our thoughts of people, their struggle,

their path in life’s adventure.

How careless our judgements, our lack of empathy

and understanding of human plight.

We have such potential to love and nurture humanity,

yet we choose to marginalise and reject all that is different,

to segregate and belittle ourselves as a result.

How long must we toil within this course, remain blind.

It is not humanity I detest, simply the magnitude of the illusion,

the unqualified immensity of selfishness and greed.

What will it take before we see truth,

the stark reality of peace and the acceptance of love.

Very touching poem...maybe till we are unable to be compassionate enough with ourselves about our human condition we can't find compassion and love for others...a vicious circle we can break though...

Though flawed we may be; perhaps one day we can overcome this foolish existence of plight that we fight over.
