Between Darkness and Light

Between Darkness and Light
By Tony DeLorger © 2011
Between darkness and light resides humanity,
the potential of both our burden of living,
our overriding purpose of choice.
We vacillate between the two with abandon,
constantly realigning our concepts of morality,
our justifications defining who we think we are.
Yet what do we achieve in this art of self-deception,
this charade of dipping our toes in sin with good reason,
to remain in what we consider truth.
We are imperfect beings and our journey is ours to experience,
ours to understand and to realise potential.
Is it purity that defines us, or the ascendance from darkness,
the struggle to rise above adversity and strife,
and to nestle in our beds of down,
smug in the knowledge that we are better that someone else.
Is purity an illusion of mind,
an impossibility, of unlikely outcome.
Is darkness and illusion of mind,
simply a void without light, a void of potential.
Beyond religious and philosophical ideals,
we are grey, between light and dark,
and however we tread this path of life,
is up to us and no-one else.
The choice of light, of a loving heart,
is a path of potential happiness and joy,
by nature, gaining a smoother and less troubled life.
The choice of darkness is not wrong, simply different,
a path filled with obstacles and limits.
When we choose a life of light, of compassion and kindness,
we begin to fill darkness, as it cannot overcome light.
The smallest light illuminates darkness,
as a small kindness activates the potential of love.
We may be bound by two extremes,
but we have free will and choose our destiny within them.
